Uganda Car Hire FAQs
Practical answers to questions regarding self-drive requirements, insurance coverage, cross-border permits, fuel policies, and roadside support.
Rental conditions should come from the actual agreement, not from assumptions about what car hire “normally” includes. These answers explain the decisions to make before requesting a quote.
Can I self-drive in Uganda?+
Yes, self-drive rentals are available, subject to the driver and licence requirements of the specific rental agreement. Tell us your route before choosing the vehicle.
Do I need a 4x4?+
For national parks, rough access roads, remote areas or wetter-season travel, a proper 4x4 is usually the safer choice. City and airport transfers may not need one.
Can I hire a car with a driver?+
Yes. Driver hire can be arranged for transfers and longer road trips. Confirm whether the service is transport only or includes safari guiding.
Is fuel included?+
Do not assume it is. The fuel policy is stated in the quotation or rental agreement for the specific booking.
Is there a mileage limit?+
Mileage terms vary by rental. Check the written agreement before payment.
What insurance is included?+
Insurance scope and exclusions must be stated in the rental contract. Ask specifically about excess, tyres, glass, underbody damage and uses that may invalidate cover.
Is a security deposit required?+
It depends on the rental terms. The amount and refund conditions should be written into the agreement before payment.
Can I drive across the border?+
Cross-border travel is not assumed. It requires written permission and may require additional documents, insurance or fees. Ask before building a Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania crossing into the route.
What happens if the vehicle breaks down?+
The rental should provide a clear support and recovery procedure. Ask what number to call, what geographic coverage applies and when a replacement vehicle is provided.
Can the vehicle be delivered to Entebbe Airport?+
Airport delivery or a separate airport transfer can be arranged when confirmed in advance. The best option depends on arrival time and whether you want to drive immediately after the flight.
What documents do I need?+
Document requirements depend on the driver’s licence and the rental agreement. Confirm them before travel rather than arriving with only a phone photo of a licence.
Can I take the vehicle into national parks?+
Only if the rental permits that use and the vehicle is suitable. Park entry fees and vehicle charges are separate from the rental unless the quote explicitly says otherwise.
Should I book self-drive or a driver?+
Choose self-drive when you enjoy road travel and are comfortable taking responsibility for the vehicle. Choose a driver when you want local road knowledge and less fatigue.
