Rwanda’s gorilla trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park in the northwest of the country. Its biggest planning advantage is access. You can arrive in Kigali, transfer to the Volcanoes area and focus almost entirely on the trek without building a long overland safari around it.
That makes Rwanda especially strong for travellers with limited time. It does not automatically make it the better choice for everyone. Permit cost is higher than Uganda for most international visitors, and travellers wanting chimpanzees plus a classic savannah safari usually have more route options in Uganda.
Volcanoes National Park is the centre of the trip
Gorilla trekking days begin early at the park registration area. After briefing, visitors are allocated to a gorilla group and continue with ranger guides and trackers. The gorillas are free-ranging animals, so the time required to reach them varies.
The terrain is volcanic and can be wet, steep and uneven. A short transfer from your lodge does not mean an easy trek. Bring proper hiking footwear, rain protection and gloves, and consider hiring a porter.

Rwanda gorilla permit cost
Rwanda Development Board lists the foreign visitor gorilla permit at USD 1,500 per person, with a minimum trekking age of 15. Promotional categories and discounts can have conditions and date restrictions, so they should be checked against the RDB booking platform at the time of planning.

How many days do you need?
A short Rwanda gorilla trip can work in two to three nights depending on flight times. That does not mean you should land, drive straight to the park and trek the next morning after a difficult overnight journey. Build in enough rest to start the trek alert and properly equipped.
A common rhythm is:
- Arrive in Kigali and rest.
- Transfer to the Volcanoes region.
- Gorilla trek the following morning.
- Recover locally or return to Kigali the next day.
If you want a second activity, golden monkey tracking or a nature-focused day around the Virunga area is easier to add than another long road sector.
Rwanda or Uganda for gorilla trekking?
Rwanda is usually stronger for short trips and travellers who value simpler access. Uganda is usually stronger when gorillas are one part of a longer primate and wildlife safari, and its standard permit cost is lower for foreign non-residents.
The comparison should be made on total trip design, not permit price alone. Accommodation tier, road transfers, flight connections and how many other parks you want to include can change the final budget considerably.

Two days works here because Volcanoes National Park can be reached from Kigali in a few hours. The first day combines a city visit with the transfer north, and the second is almost entirely built around the gorilla trek before the drive back. It is a compressed itinerary for travellers whose schedule does not allow a slower stay around the park. Volcanoes National Park covers about 160 square kilometres within the wider Virunga Conservation Area. Karisimbi, Sabinyo, Muhabura, Bisoke and Gahinga are five of the eight main Virunga volcanoes, and the park also supports golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes and more than 178 bird species. Gorilla trekking and Dian Fossey's conservation legacy share the focus of this three-day Volcanoes National Park itinerary. One day is spent with a habituated gorilla family, while the other follows the trail toward Fossey's tomb and the former Karisoke research area. Kigali frames the trip with a city visit on arrival and the return transfer on the final afternoon. Fossey's work at Karisoke changed scientific understanding of mountain gorillas. Her early field methods included imitating gorilla vocalisations and behaviour to reduce their fear of her presence, while her later years became increasingly focused on anti-poaching and the illegal capture of gorillas. She was killed in her cabin in 1985; the circumstances remain contested, but her death is closely tied to the difficult conservation history of the period. The route also includes Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, so the three days connect Kigali's recent history, present-day cultural interpretation, gorilla conservation and the physical landscape where Fossey worked.

The itinerary uses Day 1 for Kigali and the road north, Day 2 for the gorilla trek and Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, and Day 3 for the return to the city.
