Getting around Uganda
Compare road transfers, domestic flights, self-drive and private drivers for Uganda safaris, with practical route advice for Bwindi and national parks.

Uganda is a road-trip country for most safari travellers, but the map can be misleading. Distances between parks are manageable; the time comes from traffic, mountain roads, unsealed sections and the final approach to lodges.
The best itineraries use road travel where it adds context and domestic flights where a long transfer would consume too much of a short trip.
Private road transfers
A private safari vehicle is the most flexible way to move through western Uganda. It keeps the same luggage with you, allows sensible stops and connects parks that do not have direct scheduled flights between them.
This is especially useful on a route such as:
Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi
The distances become part of a logical progression rather than repeated returns to Entebbe.
Domestic flights
Flights are valuable when they remove a full day of road travel. Bwindi can be accessed through airstrips used for the northern or southern regions, followed by a road transfer to the correct sector.
Murchison Falls also has airstrip access, including Pakuba for many itineraries.
Flight schedules, baggage limits and routes are high-change information. Check the actual travel date before building the rest of the day around a timetable.
Self-drive
Self-drive suits travellers who are comfortable with left-side driving, long distances and responsibility for the vehicle.
Do not choose it solely to save money. The trip changes when you become the driver.

Car hire with a driver
A private driver is useful when you want transport flexibility without handling navigation and road conditions yourself.
For safari trips, confirm whether the service is driver-only or includes professional safari guiding. Those are different products.
Entebbe and Kampala
Entebbe International Airport is the main international gateway. Kampala is inland and road traffic can affect transfer time significantly.
If your international flight arrives late and the next major destination is western Uganda, sleeping in Entebbe can be more efficient than transferring into Kampala and back out the next morning.
Bwindi requires sector-specific planning
Do not ask only “how far is Bwindi?” Ask which sector.
Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo use different road approaches. A flight or road route that is excellent for Buhoma may be poor for southern Bwindi.
The rule for long transfers
Avoid a long road day immediately before a physically demanding trek when the itinerary can be arranged differently.
Travel is part of the safari, but road fatigue should not be the dominant memory of the trip.
