Uganda gorilla safaris

Private Uganda gorilla safaris to Bwindi and Mgahinga, with permit-first planning, sensible road or fly-in options and budget to luxury lodges.

Careful planning for unhurried journeys.

A gorilla safari should give the trek enough space. The weak version is simple: drive all day, trek the next morning, then drive all day again. It technically reaches Bwindi but wastes the experience around the permit.

We build private Uganda gorilla safaris around the trekking date first, then choose the route and lodge.

3-day gorilla safari

A three-day road trip is the minimum format and suits travellers with very limited time. Expect a long transfer day in each direction if travelling from Entebbe or Kampala.

It works, but it is not relaxed.

4 to 5 days

This is a better short gorilla trip. The extra time can be used for a slower arrival, Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mutanda depending on the sector, a forest or community activity, or simply recovery after the trek.

Do not add activities just to fill the extra night. Rest has value on a physically demanding trip.

Fly-in gorilla safari

Domestic flights can reduce the long-distance road sector. The final road transfer still depends on whether the permit is in Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo or Mgahinga.

A fly-in trip costs more but can be excellent value for travellers who have only a few days and do not want to spend two of them crossing the country by road.

Which gorilla park?

Bwindi offers more sectors and a wider lodge network. Mgahinga is smaller and works well with Kisoro, golden monkeys and the Virunga landscape.

Budget, midrange and luxury

All three can work.

Budget keeps the room and facilities simpler. Midrange buys more comfort and often better lodge atmosphere. Luxury can add privacy, service and stronger settings.

None of them changes the quality of the UWA ranger team or controls where the gorillas move.

What is included in a private gorilla safari?

A final quotation should clearly state accommodation, vehicle, guide, meals, permits, park fees, transfers and any domestic flights. It should also list exclusions rather than hiding them in small print.

We do not quote a permit as “available” until availability has actually been checked.

Start with your date. Once the permit location is known, the rest of the safari becomes much easier to design.

2-day Volcanoes National Park gorilla trekking safari

2 days

Two days works here because Volcanoes National Park can be reached from Kigali in a few hours. The first day combines a city visit with the transfer north, and the second is almost entirely built around the gorilla trek before the drive back. It is a compressed itinerary for travellers whose schedule does not allow a slower stay around the park. Volcanoes National Park covers about 160 square kilometres within the wider Virunga Conservation Area. Karisimbi, Sabinyo, Muhabura, Bisoke and Gahinga are five of the eight main Virunga volcanoes, and the park also supports golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes and more than 178 bird species. Dian Fossey's research and anti-poaching work are closely tied to this landscape. The itinerary includes Kigali, the Gisozi Genocide Memorial and one gorilla trek. The $1,500 permit fee shown here should be reconfirmed for the intended travel date.
