Journey overview

Three days at Murchison Falls gives you the park's main experiences without stretching the route unnecessarily. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is used on the drive north, then Murchison itself gets a Top of the Falls visit, a northern-bank game drive and a Nile boat cruise. The park is Uganda's largest protected area, with 76 recorded mammal species and more than 450 bird species.

Key highlights

  • Game drives looking for lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and other wildlife.
  • Boat cruise on the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls.
  • Visit the Top of the Falls for close views of the Nile passing through the gorge.
  • Track rhinos on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Itinerary

3 days of guided travel, planned by our safari team from arrival to departure.

Day 1

Travel to Murchison Falls National Park with Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary visit

Murchison Falls National Park

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary breaks the journey north from Kampala or Entebbe and gives the first wildlife activity of the safari. Join a guided rhino tracking walk, then continue to Masindi for lunch before entering Murchison Falls National Park. The Top of the Falls is the first park stop. Here the Nile is compressed through an approximately 8-metre-wide gorge before dropping downstream, after which you continue to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 2

Morning game drive and Nile boat cruise

Murchison Falls National Park

The game drive uses Murchison's northern bank, where lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs and other savannah wildlife occur. Your guide will decide where to spend time based on recent sightings, road conditions and the morning available. Lunch at the lodge is followed by the Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls. Hippos, crocodiles and birds such as fish eagles may be seen along the river, and an optional hike to the Top of the Falls can be added when timing allows.

10-day Uganda safari: Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Lake Mburo

10 days

Ten days is enough to connect Uganda's major western wildlife areas without turning every park into a one-night stop. The route begins with rhinos and Murchison Falls, moves through Kibale and Queen Elizabeth, reaches Bwindi for gorilla trekking, then uses Lake Mburo as the final wildlife stop on the return toward Kampala or Entebbe. The pace stays active. There are long road transfers and several early starts, but each move leads to a different experience: chimpanzees in Kibale, the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth, gorillas in Bwindi and open savannah again at Lake Mburo. It suits travellers who want broad coverage in a limited window and are comfortable changing lodges regularly.

3-day Queen Elizabeth National Park wildlife safari

3 days

Queen Elizabeth National Park is the entire focus of this three-day safari. The short route concentrates on the Kasenyi Plains, the Kazinga Channel, Kyambura Gorge and the Katwe crater and salt-mining area rather than trying to add another park. With 95 recorded mammal species and more than 550 bird species, there is enough range here for game viewing, a boat safari and a forested chimpanzee-tracking section within one park.

3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari

3 days

Volcanoes National Park is close enough to Kigali to make a focused three-day gorilla trip practical. The itinerary uses Day 1 for Kigali and the road north, Day 2 for the gorilla trek and Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, and Day 3 for the return to the city. Five of the main Virunga volcanoes rise within the park: Muhabura, Karisimbi, Sabinyo, Bisoke and Gahinga. The park is also closely linked to Dian Fossey's gorilla research and supports golden monkeys and other forest wildlife. Kigali remains the arrival and departure point throughout the trip. The $1,500 permit fee shown in this itinerary should be reconfirmed for the intended travel date.
