Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors

Your permit sector determines where you sleep, how you arrive and how trek morning feels. Choose the route first, then the lodge.

Match my permit to a route

One park, four very different bases.

The practical choice is usually the sector that keeps the whole route moving in one direction.

Four distinct bases, each with its own logic.

Bwindi is one national park, but gorilla trekking is organised from different sectors. For travellers, that changes almost everything around the permit: where you sleep, which road you use, how early you leave the lodge and which safari route fits naturally before or after the trek.

The four sectors most travellers compare are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Northern Bwindi

Buhoma

Works with

Queen Elizabeth and Ishasha routes

Watch for

Not a practical base for a southern permit.

Buhoma is in northern Bwindi and has the longest tourism history around gorilla trekking. It has a broad spread of accommodation and works well with routes coming through Queen Elizabeth National Park, especially when the safari includes Ishasha.

Choose Buhoma when route flow from Queen Elizabeth matters and you want a well-established lodge base close to the park entrance.

Do not choose it simply because it is the best-known name. If your permit is in southern Bwindi, Buhoma is the wrong base.

Eastern Bwindi

Ruhija

Works with

Kabale and birding-focused routes

Watch for

Mountain roads can make short map distances slow.

Ruhija sits on the eastern side of Bwindi at higher elevation. The area can feel quieter than Buhoma and works well for travellers routing through Kabale or combining birding and forest time with gorilla trekking.

The main trade-off is road access. Mountain roads can be slow, and a short distance on a map does not always mean a short transfer.

Southern Bwindi

Rushaga

Works with

Kisoro, Lake Mutanda and Rwanda-border routes

Watch for

“Bwindi” on a lodge listing does not guarantee a short drive to briefing.

Rushaga is one of the main southern trekking areas and is especially important for travellers considering gorilla habituation. It pairs naturally with Kisoro, Lake Mutanda and routes arriving from the Rwanda border side.

Accommodation ranges across budget levels, but location still matters. A lodge described as “Bwindi” can be a long drive from the actual Rushaga briefing point.

Southwestern Bwindi

Nkuringo

Works with

Southern Bwindi and ridge stays

Watch for

Expect steep terrain; a sector is not a flat administrative zone.

Nkuringo is also in southern Bwindi and is known for steep terrain and dramatic ridge views. It suits travellers who want to stay in the southern sector and prefer a quieter mountain setting.

The terrain around Nkuringo should be taken seriously. Fit travellers often enjoy it, but the word “sector” should not be mistaken for a flat administrative zone.

Booking rules that apply to every sector.

Secure the permit first, then let its location guide the lodge and wider route.

How to choose

There is no single best sector. Use this order:

  1. Check permit availability for your date.
  2. Match the sector to the route you are already travelling.
  3. Choose accommodation within practical reach of that sector.
  4. Consider your fitness and preferred lodge style.

Can you change sectors after booking?

Do not plan on it. Permit availability is controlled by Uganda Wildlife Authority, and the trekking location is a core part of the booking. Low-season permits also carry specific restrictions under the current UWA notice.

Treat the sector as fixed once the permit is secured unless UWA confirms otherwise.

The mistake to avoid: choosing a lodge from a generic “Bwindi accommodation” list before the permit sector is known.

Let the permit location shape the rest of the safari.
