Is gorilla trekking guaranteed to find gorillas?
No wildlife encounter should be sold as a guarantee. Ranger and tracker teams know the movements of habituated groups well, but the animals remain free-ranging.
How old do you need to be?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 in both Uganda and Rwanda under the current official rules.
How long does a gorilla trek take?
There is no fixed duration. The walk can be relatively short or take several hours before the gorillas are reached.
Is gorilla trekking difficult?
It can be. Expect uneven forest ground, steep slopes, mud, roots and changing weather. Read our fitness and difficulty guide.
Should I hire a porter?
Yes. A porter can carry your daypack and help with footing on steep ground. It also puts money directly into a local service role around the trekking areas.
What should I wear?
Wear broken-in hiking boots, long trousers, a long-sleeved top and rain protection. Gloves and gaiters are useful in dense or wet vegetation. See the Uganda safari packing list.
Can I trek when it rains?
Gorilla trekking runs year-round. Rain can make trails muddier and more physically demanding.
When is the best time to go?
Drier periods generally make trail conditions easier, but permit availability and the rest of the safari matter too. Uganda also has new low-season permit rates in April, May and November.

What is gorilla habituation?
Uganda offers an extended habituation experience with a longer observation period than standard trekking. It uses a separate permit and is more expensive. Read gorilla habituation in Uganda.
Which is better, Uganda or Rwanda?
Uganda is usually stronger for a longer primate and wildlife safari. Rwanda is usually easier for a short gorilla-focused trip. Compare them directly in Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking.
Can I choose the gorilla family I visit?
Group allocation is handled by the park authorities. Preferences may be discussed during briefing, but do not build the trip around a promise of a specific family unless the authority confirms it.
Can I trek if I am sick?
Primate health rules exist to reduce disease transmission. If you are unwell close to the trek, tell the operator and park team rather than hiding symptoms. Current health rules should be checked before travel.
Should I book the permit before flights?
If gorillas are the main reason for the trip, check permit availability early. The permit date and location should anchor the itinerary.
