18-day Uganda safari: Jinja, Kidepo, Murchison, Bwindi and Lake Mburo

Jinja is the first stop rather than another night in Kampala. From Entebbe Airport, travel east past Mabira Forest, tea-growing areas and the roadside markets at Namawojjolo, then check in at your lodge on the Nile and keep the evening free for rest.

White-water rafting sets the tone for the morning on the Nile. Once off the river, have lunch, visit the Source of the Nile, then continue east to Sipi Falls in the foothills of Mount Elgon for the night.

Sipi is explored on foot today. A guided hike links the area's three waterfalls and explains the local geology, while the afternoon coffee tour follows the crop from growing and processing through roasting and tasting.

The route turns north toward Karamoja, with Moroto at the foot of Mount Moroto as the day's destination. A stop in Soroti breaks the drive through eastern Uganda's towns and rural landscapes. Moroto's afternoon is centred on a Tepeth community visit rather than another road activity. Community hosts introduce local history, livelihood practices, songs, dances and oral traditions before you return to the lodge.

Kidepo Valley National Park is reached from Moroto across increasingly open and rugged country. Rocky outcrops, savannah and broad plains dominate the drive, and ostriches are occasionally seen along the route. Narus Valley is the first wildlife area once you arrive and have lunch. The afternoon game drive looks for buffalo herds, elephants, lions and other savannah species, with the actual route shaped by recent movement and conditions.

Sunrise is worth using in the Narus Valley. The morning game drive searches for zebras, jackals, lions, ostriches and other wildlife while temperatures are still lower and the park is quieter. Later, the focus moves from wildlife to people at a Karamojong manyatta. The community-led visit covers cattle-keeping, dance, beadwork and the social importance of livestock rather than treating the homestead as a quick photo stop.

Today puts you on foot in Kidepo before returning to the vehicle. An armed ranger leads the nature walk along dry riverbeds, rocky ground and acacia-dotted savannah, with attention to the ecosystem and smaller species such as dik-diks and ground hornbills. The afternoon game drive reaches farther into Kidepo Valley and includes Kanangorok Hot Springs near the South Sudan border. Much of the value here is the scale of the landscape as much as any single wildlife sighting.

A long southbound transfer takes you from Kidepo toward Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Breaks are taken on the road, and after arrival and lunch a guided nature walk gives you a first look at the sanctuary's birdlife and smaller mammals such as bushbucks and warthogs.

Rhino tracking is the main reason for the Ziwa stop. A sanctuary guide leads the walk, locates the rhinos and explains the conservation programme before you continue west. Murchison Falls National Park follows later in the day. On arrival, visit the Top of the Falls, where the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before dropping downstream, then continue to the lodge.

Murchison gets both land and water time today. The morning game drive looks for lions, giraffes, elephants and antelopes across the savannah; after lunch, the Nile boat trip approaches the base of the falls with chances to see hippos, crocodiles and birdlife along the river.

Kibale is the next major change of habitat. The road through western Uganda passes villages, rolling hills and tea-growing areas before reaching a forest that supports 13 primate species, including red colobus and L'Hoest's monkeys.

Bigodi Wetlands is explored before leaving the Kibale area. A community guide interprets the wetland, where the Great Blue Turaco, black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys and other species may be encountered. Queen Elizabeth National Park comes next via the crater-lake region. On a clear day the Rwenzori Mountains may be visible along the route; after check-in, the evening is kept free for rest.

Kasenyi Plains gets the cooler morning hours. Uganda kobs, elephants and buffaloes are regular targets for the drive, while lions and leopards depend on recent movement and are never treated as guaranteed sightings. The Kazinga Channel fills the afternoon. The boat runs between Lake George and Lake Edward, passing hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds, with elephants and buffaloes sometimes approaching the water's edge.

Ishasha lies on the route south from Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi, which makes the morning game drive a useful part of the transfer. The guide will search for tree-climbing lions in the fig-tree areas, while elephants, buffaloes and topis are also found in the sector. From Ishasha, continue into the greener hills around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arrive in the afternoon, check in and keep the evening quiet before the next forest day.

Bwindi gets a slower forest day before the gorilla trek. A guide leads the waterfall trail through dense habitat, explaining plant life and ecology while looking for black-and-white colobus monkeys, birdlife and the waterfalls along the route. Ruhija is the next stop after lunch. The transfer places you in the correct sector for the following morning's trek, with the remaining afternoon left for rest at the lodge.

The gorilla trek is the physical focus of the safari. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers brief the group, make the day's assignments and lead you into Bwindi to locate a habituated family. The search can take between 2 and 8 hours depending on location and trail conditions; once the gorillas are found, the permitted hour begins. If energy and timing allow, a Batwa community visit can be added later in the day for an introduction to forest traditions and survival skills.

Lake Mburo is the final national park on the circuit and provides a gentler return toward Entebbe. After arriving for lunch, an afternoon game drive looks for zebras, giraffes, impalas, elands, buffaloes and, less predictably, leopard among rolling hills and acacia woodland.
