8-day Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife safari

Lake Mburo makes a practical first stop after arrival in Entebbe. Your guide will meet you at the airport, go through the route, then drive southwest through rural Uganda with a pause at the Equator in Kayabwe. Once inside the park, lunch and check-in are followed by a boat safari on Lake Mburo and a short evening game drive. Hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds are associated with the lake, while zebras, buffaloes, elands and other wildlife are the focus on land. What you see will depend on conditions and recent movement.

One more early game drive in Lake Mburo comes before the longer transfer to Bwindi. The road south crosses rolling hills, tea-growing areas and villages across southwestern Uganda. Lunch is taken en route, with arrival in Bwindi expected by late afternoon. The evening is intentionally quiet so you can rest before the gorilla trek.

Bwindi dictates the rhythm today. An early park briefing comes first, then rangers and trackers lead you into the forest to locate the assigned mountain gorilla family. The search can take from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on the gorillas' location and movement. Once they are found, you spend the permitted hour observing the group while following ranger instructions. There is nothing else that needs to be squeezed into the day. Return to the lodge after the trek, eat, rest and recover from the forest walk.

Leaving Bwindi behind, the landscape opens gradually on the way to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Banana-growing areas and crater lakes appear along the route before the road reaches the park's savannah country. An afternoon game drive in the Kasenyi Plains follows lunch and check-in. Elephants, buffaloes and antelopes are common targets for the drive, while lions and leopards remain possible rather than promised sightings.

Queen Elizabeth gets a full wildlife morning rather than a quick pass through. Your guide will use the game drive to search areas missed the previous afternoon and adjust the route around recent movement. Elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and predators are all possible. Kazinga Channel boat safari The Kazinga Channel changes the perspective in the afternoon. From the boat, look for hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds, with larger mammals sometimes approaching the banks to drink.

A final look at Queen Elizabeth comes before the drive to Kibale. Villages, rolling hills and tea-growing areas mark the transition back toward forest country, with lunch taken on the road and arrival around evening.

Chimpanzee tracking takes over the morning in Kibale Forest. Park guides lead the search, and when the chimpanzees are located you spend the allowed viewing time observing the group under ranger guidance. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is the afternoon counterpoint to the chimpanzee trek. The guided walk focuses on birdlife, primates and the community conservation work around the wetland.

The safari finishes with the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport. If you want more time in Uganda, the route can continue to Jinja, Lake Victoria or another wildlife area rather than ending here.
