Journey overview

Kibale is the reason for this short primate safari. Three days gives you one full chimpanzee-tracking morning, a Bigodi Wetlands walk and time around Fort Portal without turning the trip into a wider western Uganda circuit. The route suits travellers who want forest and primate experiences but do not need gorillas or savannah parks on the same journey.

Key highlights

  • Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest with park guides.
  • Guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary for birds and primates.
  • Crater-lake scenery and views toward the Rwenzori Mountains.
  • Optional cultural and community visits around Fort Portal.

Itinerary

3 days of guided travel, planned by our safari team from arrival to departure.

Day 1

Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale National Park

Fort Portal breaks the drive from Kampala or Entebbe to Kibale and provides the lunch stop. Tea-growing areas and views toward the Rwenzori Mountains shape much of the route, with optional visits to Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves or the Karambi Royal Tombs if timing allows. Bigodi Wetlands is used in the evening after lodge check-in. A guided walk looks for primates, sitatunga and birdlife such as the Great Blue Turaco in the forest-edge and wetland habitat.

Day 2

Chimpanzee tracking and afternoon birding

Kibale National Park

Kanyanchu Visitor Center is the meeting point for the chimpanzee briefing. From there, a ranger leads the group into Kibale Forest to search for a habituated community. Once the chimpanzees are located, you observe their behaviour under ranger guidance, with colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys among the other primates that may appear. The afternoon stays flexible after lunch. Choose a birding excursion or a cultural walk with local communities rather than forcing both into the same day.

Day 3

Return to Kampala or Entebbe

Kampala or Entebbe

Kibale falls behind as you start the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe. Crater lakes, tea-growing areas and villages line the route, with lunch on the way and an optional community-project stop if time allows before final drop-off.

10-day Uganda safari: Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Lake Mburo

10 days

Ten days is enough to connect Uganda's major western wildlife areas without turning every park into a one-night stop. The route begins with rhinos and Murchison Falls, moves through Kibale and Queen Elizabeth, reaches Bwindi for gorilla trekking, then uses Lake Mburo as the final wildlife stop on the return toward Kampala or Entebbe. The pace stays active. There are long road transfers and several early starts, but each move leads to a different experience: chimpanzees in Kibale, the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth, gorillas in Bwindi and open savannah again at Lake Mburo. It suits travellers who want broad coverage in a limited window and are comfortable changing lodges regularly.
