3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking and Dian Fossey legacy safari

Kigali provides the historical context before the mountain section. Meet your guide at the airport or hotel, review the route and begin the city tour before continuing north later in the day. Kigali city tour

• Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre: Learn about Rwanda’s tragic history and its recovery.
• Former Presidential Palace Museum: Learn more about Rwanda’s political history.
• Local markets and Craft Village: Visit selected markets and shops for Rwandan art and crafts. Lunch in Kigali marks the transition from city touring to Volcanoes National Park. The drive takes about two hours through Rwanda's northern hills before lodge check-in.

Gorilla trekking: Kinigi is an early start. After breakfast, report to park headquarters for the briefing, where rangers explain the rules and make the day's gorilla group assignments before you enter the forest. The trail moves through bamboo forest and rugged slopes, and the search may take between 1 and 6 hours depending on the group's location. Once the gorillas are found, you spend the permitted hour observing the family while following ranger instructions. Practical notes

• Porters are available for hire to assist with carrying equipment and navigating the terrain.
• Follow all ranger instructions to ensure a safe and respectful encounter. Once the trek is complete, return to park headquarters for the trekking certificate, then continue to the lodge for lunch and rest. Dian Fossey tomb and Karisoke research area hike: The final day returns to the forest for a different reason. Following an early park briefing, hike toward Dian Fossey's tomb on the trail between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, crossing the highland environment where much of her field research took place. Rangers use the route to explain Fossey's research, anti-poaching work and the conservation history of the area. The hike includes:

• Dian Fossey’s Tomb: Visit Fossey’s grave near the grave of the gorilla Digit.
• Karisoke Research Center: See the remains of the former research site and learn how the station operated in this mountain environment. Allow roughly 3 to 4 hours for the hike, with physically demanding sections depending on trail and weather conditions. The value of the route is the context: the former Karisoke site, Fossey's work and the conservation history attached to this part of the Virungas. Return to Kigali: After descending to the trailhead, have lunch and drive back to Kigali. Drop-off is at your hotel or Kigali International Airport according to your departure schedule.
