Chimp Tracking & Habituation

The Primate Capital of the World

Covering 795 square kilometres in western Uganda, Kibale contains the highest density and diversity of primates in all of East Africa.

Beyond its celebrated population of over 1,500 eastern chimpanzees, the canopy shelters endangered Central African red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Tracking vs Habituation Experience

Standard chimpanzee tracking offers 60 minutes of close observation once the troop is located, departing twice daily at 08:00 AM and 02:00 PM from Kanyanchu River Camp.

For photographers and primate researchers, the full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) allows you to follow researchers from de-nesting at dawn until chimps build new nests at dusk.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary & Community

Bordering the eastern fringe of Kibale, the Magombe swamp in Bigodi is an exceptional community-managed conservation sanctuary.

A 3-hour guided boardwalk trek through the wetland frequently yields 8 different monkey species and over 200 bird species, including the iconic Great Blue Turaco.

Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes Pairing

Just 45 minutes from the tracking trailhead lies the picturesque Ndali-Kasenda crater lake cluster: dozens of deep emerald volcanic lakes surrounded by tea plantations and dramatic ridges.

Staying at high-elevation crater rim lodges provides cool, mosquito-free evenings and tranquil afternoon walks between forest treks.
