Covering 1,442 square kilometres, Kidepo is framed by towering mountain massifs. Because the Narus River retains permanent water throughout the dry season, the Narus Valley becomes a magnet for wildlife.
It is Uganda’s only protected habitat for cheetahs, wild dogs, and bat-eared foxes, alongside thriving prides of lions frequently spotted resting on massive granite kopjes.
Mega Herds of Cape Buffalo
Kidepo Valley is renowned for hosting some of Africa’s largest single Cape buffalo aggregations, with single herds numbering upwards of 1,000 to 2,000 individuals moving across the savannah floor.
Elephants, Rothschild giraffes, and Burchell’s zebras roam side-by-side in raw wilderness untouched by mass tourism.
The Kidepo Basin & Ostrich Country
In the northern Kidepo Basin, the wide dry sand bed of the Kidepo River is lined with borassus palm forests stretching toward the South Sudan border.
This arid zone is the sole territory in Uganda where wild common ostriches, secretary birds, and pygmy falcons thrive in undisturbed numbers.
