Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking
The gorillas are the reason to go in both countries. The better choice depends on how much time you have, how you arrive and what you want the journey to hold beyond the forest.

Start with the practical differences.
Uganda and Rwanda both offer mountain gorilla trekking. The gorillas are not the reason one country wins over the other. The decision comes down to access, permit cost, route design and what you want the rest of the trip to include.
For a short gorilla-only journey, Rwanda is often easier. For a longer safari combining gorillas, chimpanzees and savannah wildlife, Uganda usually gives you more route options.

UWA’s tariff covering July 2024 to June 2026 listed the foreign non-resident gorilla tracking permit at USD 800. The revised tariff effective 1 January 2027 also lists USD 800. The current low-season notice sets USD 600 for foreign non-residents in April, May and November. Because the notice does not separately state the standard July to December 2026 rate, that amount should be confirmed with UWA for a 2026 travel date.
Rwanda Development Board lists the standard foreign visitor permit at USD 1,500.
Permit price is only one line in the trip budget. A short Rwanda itinerary can require fewer road days and hotel nights, while a Uganda itinerary may give you more wildlife content for the same overall trip length.
Rwanda makes a Kigali-to-forest route possible without turning the arrival into a long overland safari.
Access shapes the rhythm of the trip.
Rwanda’s advantage is geographic simplicity. Volcanoes National Park is reached by road from Kigali, making a short two or three-night gorilla trip practical.
Uganda’s main gorilla areas are in the southwest, far from Entebbe by road. Travellers can either accept a full travel day, use domestic flights where suitable, or build a route through other parks rather than treating the drive as dead time.
Neither country can promise an easy day on the trail.
Neither country guarantees an easy trek. Gorilla groups move. Rain changes trail conditions. The group assigned to you can be close or deep in the forest.
Uganda’s Bwindi terrain varies by sector. Rwanda’s Volcanoes terrain can be steep, muddy and affected by altitude. Fitness matters in both countries.
What do you want to happen after the trek?
This is where Uganda becomes more compelling. From Bwindi, a route can continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat safari, then to Kibale for chimpanzee tracking. The country supports a coherent primate-first safari without flying between countries.
Rwanda is stronger when the gorilla trek is the main event and time is limited. Empathy Tours does not position Rwanda as a broad safari destination. Our Rwanda work is focused on gorilla trekking and the logistics directly connected to it.
Uganda gives a longer primate-and-wildlife route room to unfold before or after the forest.

If the budget is close, compare complete itineraries rather than permit prices. A cheaper permit attached to a badly designed route is not better value.
