Kibale National Park is Uganda’s main chimpanzee tracking destination and the strongest choice for travellers building a primate-focused safari. Uganda Wildlife Authority also offers chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge within the Queen Elizabeth area, but the two experiences serve different route needs.
If chimpanzees are a major reason for travelling, give Kibale its own stop rather than treating them as an optional add-on.
What happens on a chimpanzee tracking session?
You report for registration and a ranger briefing, then enter the forest with a guide. Chimpanzees are highly mobile and can move through the canopy or along the ground, so the pace can change quickly.
The forest is not a zoo enclosure. Calls may lead trackers toward one subgroup while another moves away. Visibility can be clear one moment and blocked by vegetation the next.
That unpredictability is part of the experience.
Kibale chimpanzee permit price
UWA’s tariff covering July 2024 to June 2026 listed Kibale chimpanzee tracking at USD 250 for foreign non-residents, USD 200 for foreign residents and UGX 180,000 for East African Community citizens. The current 2026 to 2027 notice introduces a low-season foreign non-resident rate of USD 200 for April, May and November, and sets the revised standard tariff below from 1 January 2027. For other July to December 2026 travel dates, confirm the applicable standard rate directly with UWA.

Chimpanzee habituation
The habituation experience is a longer-format activity for travellers who want more time following chimpanzees and are comfortable dedicating a larger part of the day to the forest.
From 1 January 2027, UWA’s revised tariff lists chimpanzee habituation at USD 400 for foreign non-residents, USD 300 for foreign residents, USD 250 for Rest of Africa visitors and UGX 250,000 for East African Community citizens.
Age limits
UWA’s 2024 gorilla and chimpanzee permit guidelines state a minimum age of 12 years for chimpanzee tracking and viewing. Some park pages and older online material can show different ages, so the permit guideline should be checked again before final family-trip planning.
Kibale or Kyambura?
Choose Kibale when chimpanzees are a core objective. Choose Kyambura when you are already staying in Queen Elizabeth National Park and want an additional forest activity without adding another destination.
Kibale gives the trip a more complete primate focus and combines naturally with Queen Elizabeth afterward.

That sequence moves from chimpanzees to savannah wildlife and then gorillas without unnecessary backtracking.
