Uganda is strongest when the gorilla trek is followed by a safari that changes the pace. Forest first, then open savannah, a boat trip and slower game drives. The route feels more balanced than stacking another demanding trek immediately after Bwindi.
The right wildlife park depends on how many days you have.
Bwindi + Queen Elizabeth
This is the cleanest combination. Queen Elizabeth sits on the western route and can connect with Bwindi through Ishasha or the wider Kasese corridor.
Use it for:
- Game drives
- Kazinga Channel boat safari
- Ishasha when it fits the permit sector
A five to seven-night trip can make this combination work without trying to include the whole country.
Bwindi + Lake Mburo
This suits shorter road trips. Lake Mburo can break the return journey and add zebras, walking safaris and a compact savannah experience.
It is not a substitute for a larger park, but it is efficient.
Bwindi + Murchison Falls
This is a much bigger trip. Murchison is in northern Uganda and should not be paired with Bwindi unless the itinerary has enough nights or uses domestic flights intelligently.
The combination is strong when you want a broad Uganda safari, weak when squeezed into seven days.
Add Kibale for chimpanzees
Kibale turns a gorilla and wildlife trip into a full primate route. A logical sequence is:
Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi
This is one of Uganda’s most coherent safari arcs because each stop adds a different experience.
How many days do you need?
- 5 to 7 days: gorillas plus one wildlife park
- 8 to 10 days: gorillas, chimpanzees and Queen Elizabeth
- 12+ days: broader route including Murchison or more recovery time
These are planning ranges, not fixed packages.
Keep the gorilla date fixed
The permit is the anchor. Wildlife parks are easier to rearrange than a specific Bwindi sector on a high-demand date.
If the gorilla trek matters most, plan everything else around it.

Two days works here because Volcanoes National Park can be reached from Kigali in a few hours. The first day combines a city visit with the transfer north, and the second is almost entirely built around the gorilla trek before the drive back. It is a compressed itinerary for travellers whose schedule does not allow a slower stay around the park. Volcanoes National Park covers about 160 square kilometres within the wider Virunga Conservation Area. Karisimbi, Sabinyo, Muhabura, Bisoke and Gahinga are five of the eight main Virunga volcanoes, and the park also supports golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes and more than 178 bird species. Dian Fossey's research and anti-poaching work are closely tied to this landscape. The itinerary includes Kigali, the Gisozi Genocide Memorial and one gorilla trek. The $1,500 permit fee shown here should be reconfirmed for the intended travel date.

The four-hour gorilla habituation experience is what defines this three-day Bwindi safari. Unlike the standard trek, the activity follows a semi-habituated family with researchers, trackers and rangers and allows up to four hours with the gorillas once they are located. The rest of the itinerary is deliberately simple because the road transfer from Kampala or Entebbe takes most of Day 1 and Day 3.

With only three days, this itinerary keeps the plan simple: drive to Bwindi, trek the gorillas, then return to Kampala or Entebbe. The road journey is long in both directions, so this is best for travellers who have limited time and are comfortable spending much of Day 1 and Day 3 in the vehicle. The middle day is reserved for the forest rather than being crowded with extra activities.
