Golden monkey trekking in Uganda takes place in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, on the Ugandan side of the Virunga volcanic range. It is a strong second primate experience for travellers already staying near Kisoro or Mgahinga for gorilla trekking.
The activity is not a smaller version of a gorilla trek. Golden monkeys move quickly through bamboo and forest, so the experience is more active and visually busy.
What is the trek like?
After a briefing, ranger guides lead the group into the forest to locate habituated golden monkeys. The monkeys can move through vegetation rapidly, which means photography often requires quicker reactions than gorilla trekking.
The terrain can still be muddy and uneven. Good footwear matters even when the total day is usually less demanding than a long gorilla trek.
Golden monkey permit price in Uganda
UWA’s tariff covering July 2024 to June 2026 listed golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga at USD 60 for foreign non-residents, USD 50 for foreign residents and UGX 40,000 for East African Community citizens. That tariff states that the activity fee excludes park entrance and requires prior booking. The supplied 2026 to 2027 notice does not state a replacement golden monkey rate, so confirm the current amount directly with UWA before payment.
Golden monkey tracking or habituation?
UWA also lists a separate golden monkey habituation experience under the current tariff. The extended format suits travellers who want more time around the monkeys and are comfortable spending longer in the forest.
Do not book the extended option automatically. The normal tracking session is enough for many travellers.
Combine golden monkeys with gorillas
Mgahinga makes the pairing easy because both experiences are based in the same national park area. A sensible rhythm is to do the more physically important activity first, then leave enough recovery time before the second trek.
If your gorilla permit is in Bwindi, golden monkeys can still be added through Kisoro, but the road plan needs to make sense. Do not move across southwestern Uganda solely to add one more species unless the extra night earns its place.
